■コラム「インドに観る英会話」

　これまでも何度かコラムにて書いていますが、英会話で大切なのは「伝えようとする気持ち」です。

　インドの公用語はヒンディー語ですが、インド人が英語を喋るというのは良く知られています。実際に仕事や買い物は英語で事足りました。
　ただ、全員が完璧に英語が話せるわけではありません。話してみると判りますが、発音や単語力共に上手に話せている人はそう多くいませんでした。しかし、なぜか普通に会話が成り立ってしまうものです。

　出張中の日曜日には現地のスタッフに街を案内してもらい、観光と買い物をしました。
　"Every thing high cost in Japan, here low."
　『日本では何でも高いけど、ここは安いよ』
と言ってました。もちろん英語の文法的には正確ではありませんが、言いたい事は完全に伝わりました。
　難しい単語を使うと伝わらないこともあり、そういう場合は簡単な単語を使って表現していました。

　「英語が話せる」という質問に対し、日本では「話せる」とハッキリ応える人は少ないと思います。しかし、この彼は「自分は英語が話せる」と言っていますし、他にも同等のレベルで「英語が話せる」と言っている人がたくさんいます。
　別に完璧に英語を話せる必要は無く、英語で会話ができれば「話せる」と言っているのだと思います。
　実際、英語を話す目的を考えると意思さえ伝えることができればそれでいいと思います。発音や英文法は完璧ではなくても良いので、自分で「英語が話せる」と思えるだけでも英会話に対する姿勢が変わるのではないかと思います。
